As the number of data subscriptions in Ghana rose from 15,804,608 subscribers at the end of February 2015 to 16,106,218 at the end of March 2015 indicating a penetration rate of 59.78 per cent, according to records provided by the National Communications Authority, Tigo Ghana has made impressive gains to the end of the first quarter of 2015.
Tigo continued to appealed to the Ghanaian subscribers with its innovative products and services hence increasing its data subscription base by 147,811, representing 6.42 percent in March 2,451,350 from February’s 2,303,539.
Although MTN and Airtel Ghana increased their data subscription figures by 1.55 and 2.39 percent respectively, their total market gains top 3.94 percent.
Surprisingly Vodafone and Glo Ghana were not able to hold up to their high gains they made by the end of January 2015. While Ghana’s second leading network operator witnessed a nose dive from 2, 954,125 in February to 2, 947, 136 at the end of March, Glo Ghana also recorded a fall from February’s figure of 643,557 to end March with 629,958 subscribers. Glo’s market share for the month was 3.91 per cent.
In all Vodafone lost 6,989 subscribers by the end of the first quarter and Glo also could not hold on to 13,599 of its subscribers, letting them go to find better data service out there.
Expresso managed to attract some subscribers onto its network which saw it increase it data subscription figures by 3,270 or 9.01 percent to 39,571 from 36,301 at the end of February, giving it a 0.25 per cent market share.
In the face dire economic challenges in the country coupled with erratic power supply and the burden of huge industry taxes, Tigo Ghana continues to demonstrate its commitment and support to its subscribers with innovative packages including the recently launched Tigo Yensor Nkoaa promotion which offers subscribers the opportunity to win rechargeable power banks to mitigate the stress that they go through with power outages in the country.
